Meeting Rigoberta Menchu...kind of a big deal

Yesterday our group had the incredible opportunity of meeting Rigoberta Menchu, a Nobel Peace Prize recipient, indigenous activist, and presidential candidate. We are currently reading her book for our senior seminar class, so it was really incredible having the chance to shake hands with one of Central America’s most famous figures. When we heard she was going to be speaking at a nearby village, a group of us got up early, hopped on a chicken bus and headed out of the city. It turned out to be a small indigenous political gathering of about 50 people. They were really surprised, but happy to see a group of 15 or so extranjeros show up to their small event…we even got a shout-out :)
